5 Fibro-Friendly Lifestyle Tips for a Fulfilling Summer

Jun 11, 2026
Manage fibromyalgia symptoms during the hot Texas summer with these practical tips to stay cool and reduce disruptive pain flare-ups.

Summertime fun can mean baseball games and busy travel schedules, but the Texas heat and humidity can take it out of you. If you have fibromyalgia, the heat can trigger painful flare-ups that leave you sitting out of fun activities and feeling terrible.

At Spine & Pain Center of San Antonio in San Antonio and Live Oak, Texas, Sergio Alvarado, MD, and our expert team can evaluate your fibromyalgia symptoms and create a personalized treatment plan to help manage your pain and improve your quality of life.

Understanding fibromyalgia pain

Fibromyalgia is an incurable chronic pain condition that affects how your nervous system processes pain. For example, a sore muscle might be a minor annoyance for some, but if you have fibromyalgia, your nervous system can intensify that discomfort. This pain sensitivity increase is known as central sensitization.

Besides pain, fibromyalgia can cause fatigue, sleep disturbances, and even memory issues, also known as “fibro fog.” Heat, stress, and changes in routine can all trigger fibro pain flares.

Better fibro management in the summer

Summer brings vacations, kids out of school, and schedules that can throw you off your usual routine. That shift alone can be enough to trigger fibro symptoms. Add the Texas heat, and you might feel drained before the day even gets underway.

By adjusting your habits, you can protect your energy and still enjoy the season.

Instead of trying to “keep up,” you can work with this reality and help maintain your cool. Here are five tested ways to manage your fibro symptoms and stay more comfortable this summer:

1. Pace yourself

When you have a good day, it’s tempting to catch up on everything, but overdoing it can trigger a fibro pain flare-up that sets you back.

Instead, pace yourself by breaking activities into smaller tasks and taking frequent, short breaks. Pacing yourself helps you avoid the “boom-and-bust” cycle many people experience with fibromyalgia.

2. Try to stay cool

People with fibromyalgia are often more sensitive to heat, so staying in air conditioning on extremely hot days may help you minimize or manage your symptoms. Try to run errands early in the day, and use fans or cold packs as needed.

3. Stay active

It may be too hot for outdoor exercise, but movement is still important. By staying active, you can help reduce stiffness and sleep better.

You can get your steps in each day by walking at an indoor mall, a large store, or even at home with online “walking exercises at home” videos. Add some light stretching and stay consistent for the best results.

4. Protect your sleep

Disrupted sleep can worsen fibromyalgia symptoms. You can improve your sleep by using blackout curtains to block sunlight, keeping your bedroom cool, and maintaining a consistent wake-sleep schedule.

5. Be selective with your energy

Summer may bring more invitations, but you don’t have to say yes to everything.  Prioritize the activities that matter most and give yourself permission to leave early. Managing your energy helps you enjoy important moments without having to face a flare-up later on.
