Auto accidents can leave you shaken but otherwise feeling fine. This feeling can be deceptive, however, and hours or even days later you may feel a stiff neck, maybe a headache, or have some back pain that wasn’t there before.
Delayed symptoms after auto accidents are common. Your body protects you during stressful events like an accident by temporarily masking pain, while injuries to your neck and soft tissues can become more noticeable over time.
At Spine & Pain Center of San Antonio in San Antonio and Live Oak, Texas, Dr. Sergio Alvarado and our team can determine the source of your pain and develop a treatment plan to help you get relief. We evaluate personal injuries with a physical exam, diagnostic imaging, symptom review, and accident history.
When you’re in a car accident, your stress response can flood your body with adrenaline and cortisol. This can help you focus on immediate needs like getting out of the vehicle, checking on passengers, or talking with the police. All the while, this bodily response temporarily reduces pain receptor sensitivity.
Essentially, your “fight-or-flight response” can temporarily affect how you experience pain, and you may not fully feel an injury until later after your body calms down.
Inflammation can also take time to develop. When muscles, tendons, ligaments, or other tissues are injured, inflammation occurs around these damaged areas. You may notice swelling, tenderness, and stiffness as the day wears on — or even days later.
Whiplash is one common example: Whiplash symptoms often begin within days of an injury, and the symptoms can include headaches, neck pain, reduced range of motion, dizziness, or shoulder or upper back pain.
Other symptoms can also appear later, including back or joint pain, bruises, and even numbness, tingling, or dizziness. Because you may not notice these symptoms immediately, it’s important to pay attention to how you feel in the days following an accident.
While you might feel fine in the moment, that doesn’t mean you’re uninjured. If pain or other symptoms appear later, a medical evaluation can help determine the cause and extent of the injury. Depending on your symptoms and exam, we may use diagnostic testing — such as X-ray imaging, MRI testing, a CT scan, or nerve testing — to better assess your injury.
At Spine & Pain Center of San Antonio, we evaluate personal and motor vehicle accident injuries on a regular basis. We can also provide documentation of your injuries and treatment when needed for a personal injury claim.
